CHAMMP Cultural Competency and Diversity

Definition: Culture is an integrated pattern of human behavior, which includes but is not limited to – thought, communication, languages, beliefs, values, practices, customs, courtesies, rituals, manners of interacting, roles, relationships and expected behaviors of a racial, ethnic, religious, social or political group.

 

CHAMMP is a prescription medication misuse prevention coalition. It was developed to educate older adults and caregivers about the safe use, storage, and disposal of medications, thus improving the health of older adults and the communities where they live. CHAMMP recognizes that Cultural Competence is a key principle that must be integrated within all aspects of the services that are delivered by the coalition. The coalition will respond effectively to the needs of all persons served and their families, stakeholders, coalition members, the community, from culturally and linguistically diverse groups.

 

CHAMMP utilizes The National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards in development, review and update of their Cultural Competency Plan.

PRINCIPAL STANDARD

Standard 1:

Provide effective, equitable, understandable and respectful quality care and services that are responsive to diverse cultural health beliefs and practices, preferred languages, health literacy, and other communication needs.

 

Strategies for Implementation and Achievement

Strategies for Standards 2-15 are the building blocks for achievement of this Standard, known as the Principal Standard. By implementing and achieving the other 14 strategies, Standard 1 is accomplished.
